Confidentiality at the Surgery

We would like to assure our patients that we have a Confidentiality Policy that is rigorously applied throughout the Practice. Our strict duty of confidentiality to all our patients is enforced by the General Medical Council and the Data Protection Act 1998. This law applies to all members of our team. All our staff have received training in this area and have signed a confidentiality agreement.

Sharing your information

We only pass on information about you if there is a genuine need. Whenever we can, we remove details that identify you. The sharing of some types of very sensitive information is strictly controlled by law. For example, statutory restrictions allow disclosure only to individuals involved with the prevention and treatment of certain specific conditions such as HIV/AIDS.

Everyone working for and with the NHS has a legal duty to keep information about you confidential. Anyone who receives information from us is also under a legal duty to keep it confidential.

Your relatives, friends or carers can be kept up-to-date with your progress but only with your agreement. This means that we will not share information, even as simple as whether you have an appointment with the surgery, unless we have had your prior permission.

Access to your health care record

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, you are entitled to have access to your clinical records or any other personal information held about you. If you wish to do this you need to contact the practice manager. We may charge between £10 and £50 for this dependant upon the amount of work involved.

Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act became law on 30th November 2000. The practice conforms to the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, and have produced a publication scheme in accordance with the Act, a copy of which is available from the on our website/in our surgery acheter diprolene en ligne.

Medical Records

All records are kept on the computer system. In order to avoid mistakes when checking on records (we have over twelve thousand) we ask you to quote your date of birth when asking for any service. We use this as a cross check.

In addition to the current records, previous information is held in the paper files. All information in both systems is, of course, completely confidential and can be accessed only by healthcare professionals within the surgery. No confidential information is disclosed without the written consent of the patient.

Violent or Abusive Behaviour

All our staff are here to help you. And they follow procedures that help the practice to function efficiently.

The staff have the right to work in a safe and secure environment and we, as employers, have a legal responsibility of providing that safe and secure environment. The practice will not tolerate:

Verbal abuse to staff which prevents them from doing their job or makes them feel unsafe.

Threats of violence or actual violence to a doctor or a member of staff.

If a patient is violent or abusive whilst on the premises he or she will be asked to leave immediately. If they refuse to leave, the police will be called. Any patients who behave in this manner will be removed from the practice list with immediate effect.
